The Monterey Pop Festival of 1967 was a watershed event in American music. When it was over, the world had heard and felt the sound of a Strat® in the hands of a master. Single-coils in 1967 were bright and very clean. And, of course, they hummed. We've captured the classic bright and clean sound but totally eliminated the hum with our patented Area™ technology. We've also reduced magnet pull by 40% for improved sustain and clarity. The Area 67™ has the chime of 60s pickups, and the 2 and 4 positions are light, bright and quack-happy.

Tech Talk

Strat® pickups in the late 1960s used full-strength Alnico 5 magnets. The patented magnetic field of the Area™ models is more efficient and focused than it is on “true” single-coils, which allows us to use Alnico 2 instead. There's much less magnet pull, but no loss of output. This is a major advantage in the neck and middle positions, where sustain and intonation can both suffer if the strings are exposed to strong magnetic fields. In the bridge position, the patented technology of the Area 67™ produces a sound that's very bright but not brittle.

EMG 81/85 Set 50th Anniversary

In 1976, Rob Turner revolutionized guitar tone with the introduction of the first active guitar pickup. With their noiseless operation and unmatched clarity, EMG Pickups became an instant hit with studio musicians and players seeking a tighter response from their pickups. Soon after, with the introduction of the 81 and 85 pickups, EMG Pickups set the standard for output and attack in the heavy metal guitar community, backed by artists such as Zakk Wylde and Kerry King. Now in 2026, in honor of the 50th anniversary of EMG Pickups, this classic set will be available with the original EMG logo for a limited time. Traditionally configured with the 81 in the bridge position and the 85 in the neck, the 81 will bring tight response, endless sustain, and great high-end cut, while the 85 brings fluid lead tone and full sounding cleans to the neck position. However, EMG Pickups has never been afraid of breaking tradition, so experimenting with the 85 in the bridge and the 81 in the neck is welcomed. The 85 will bring chunky lows to the bridge position, while the 81 can produce searing lead tones in the neck.Like all EMG products, this set includes the solderless wiring system for simple installation. Make sure to check the instructions for pickup measurements before purchasing to compare your existing pickups with EMG models.

Lollar DC J-Bass Bridge Pickup

The Lollar DC J-Bass is our take on a hum-cancelling Jazz Bass pickup design. It keeps the best of the clarity, presence, and punch that J-Bass pickups are known for, while minimizing the hum. The bridge pickup is wound slightly hotter, making it a great fit for players looking for a fuller sound that’s still vintage-faithful, or PJ Bass combinations (see our PJ Bass pickup set).
