The Tone Zone®

DP155

Have you ever heard a bridge pickup that made a guitar sound like a giant mosquito attack? If you’ve run into this problem, The Tone Zone® is the solution. The Tone Zone® is hot enough to qualify as a high-output pickup, but it has a wider dynamic range — hard picking will produce a lot of power, and softer picking will be much cleaner and quieter. It’s got tremendous bass and low-mid response to reinforce the bottom end and make the overall sound bigger. The highest single notes have depth, and chords sound huge. Patented dual-resonance coils reproduce more overtones than you’d expect from such a fat-sounding pickup. It makes a great match with an Air Norton™, PAF Joe™, or PAF Pro®, and split-coil mode produces an excellent single-coil sound as well.

Tech Talk

The Tone Zone® is hot enough to qualify as a high-output pickup, but it has a wider dynamic range — hard picking will produce a lot of power, and softer picking will be much cleaner and quieter. Many models can be used in the neck position, from the Air Classic™ to the Air Zone™; the PAF Pro® and the FRED® are also good choices. Higher-output single-coil replacements like The Cruiser® and Fast Track 1™ are also recommended.

EMG 81/85 Set 50th Anniversary

In 1976, Rob Turner revolutionized guitar tone with the introduction of the first active guitar pickup. With their noiseless operation and unmatched clarity, EMG Pickups became an instant hit with studio musicians and players seeking a tighter response from their pickups. Soon after, with the introduction of the 81 and 85 pickups, EMG Pickups set the standard for output and attack in the heavy metal guitar community, backed by artists such as Zakk Wylde and Kerry King. Now in 2026, in honor of the 50th anniversary of EMG Pickups, this classic set will be available with the original EMG logo for a limited time. Traditionally configured with the 81 in the bridge position and the 85 in the neck, the 81 will bring tight response, endless sustain, and great high-end cut, while the 85 brings fluid lead tone and full sounding cleans to the neck position. However, EMG Pickups has never been afraid of breaking tradition, so experimenting with the 85 in the bridge and the 81 in the neck is welcomed. The 85 will bring chunky lows to the bridge position, while the 81 can produce searing lead tones in the neck.Like all EMG products, this set includes the solderless wiring system for simple installation. Make sure to check the instructions for pickup measurements before purchasing to compare your existing pickups with EMG models.

Lollar DC J-Bass Bridge Pickup

The Lollar DC J-Bass is our take on a hum-cancelling Jazz Bass pickup design. It keeps the best of the clarity, presence, and punch that J-Bass pickups are known for, while minimizing the hum. The bridge pickup is wound slightly hotter, making it a great fit for players looking for a fuller sound that’s still vintage-faithful, or PJ Bass combinations (see our PJ Bass pickup set).
